From 22 till 26 October, the Flemish world music scene will again be present at Womex, the world's biggest showcase festival & conference for world, ethnical and folk music. This year's 20th anniversary edition takes place in Santiago de Compostela and will see a Belgian delegation of no less than 80 members, 3 Belgian showcases, and a fifth edition of the Flamundo compilation series for good measure.

The Belgian showcase programme will 'stir it up' big time, with Brussels-based DJ set Rebel up! Soundclash, good-time music specialists La Chiva Gantiva and Belgian rapper with Congolese roots Baloji.

The new Flamundo compilation CD was put together for the occasion by Guy Morley, independent promoter and programmer of world, jazz and contemporary music. Guy was invited by WOMEX to be on the showcase selection jury for the 2014 programme as well.

On his relationship to the region of Flanders and it's world music scene:

"I was first attracted to the Country by the astonishing arts scene that championed ‘the alternative’. Where La Ballets C de la B confounded and amazed me, inspiring me to make my first trip to Ghent to visit the legendary Vooruit, a venue originally built by communists and after which and in its hay day produced the most radical and fantastic theatre, dance and music. The geography of Flanders underpins a unique series of factors. It is at the center of the European story, but owns an individual international perspective where great musicianship alongside that alternative edge of experimental jazz and art rock are core values.

I have helped compile current music from the region which will go some way to supporting a great scene--as well as convincing you that any lazy stereotypes about Flanders needs to be challenged."

As during the previous editions of Womex, Flanders will be hosting an umbrella stand together with WMB (Wallonie Bruxelles Musiques).
